Japan's lunar orbiting satellite KAGUYA (SELENE) carries our Ultra Low Expansion Glass-ceramics (CLEARCERAM^®-Z).

Japan's lunar orbiting satellite KAGUYA (SELENE) carries our Ultra Low Expansion Glass-ceramics (CLEARCERAM®-Z). Equipped with as many as 15 state-of-the-art measurement instruments, KAGUYA (SELENE) is the largest moon explorer since the Apollo Project, and is probing the origin and evolution of the Moon. It was launched on Friday, September 14, 2007 from Tanegashima Space Center. CLEARCERAM®-Z is mounted on the upper-atmosphere and plasma imager (UPI), an instrument for observing the Earth’s plasmasphere from orbit around the Moon. UPI is equipped with two telescopes (an extreme ultraviolet telescope TEX and a visible-light telescope TVIS manufactured by Nikon Corporation). CLEARCERAM®-Z is used with TEX. Since TEX makes observations of extreme ultraviolet radiation, a multi-layer coating that enhances reflection efficiency in the extreme ultraviolet region has been provided on the mirror substrate made of CLEARCERAM®-Z. In this way, CLEARCERAM®-Z plays an important role in this cutting-edge mirror reflector, and is attracting attention as one of the next-generation semiconductor manufacturing technologies.
